Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

• Provide DD214 showing honorable discharge (for dual-veteran households, both must qualify)
• Not currently own a home or hold a mortgage
• Consent to credit and criminal background checks (no felony convictions)
• Provide supporting documentation:
  • Proof of income
  • VA documentation (if applicable)
  • Government-issued ID
• Complete the House A Vet Intake Application
• Commit to occupying the home as a primary residence
• Complete required homebuyer education and financial management course ($99)
• Demonstrate sufficient income for long-term sustainability
• Participate in a 3-year financial and homeownership counseling program
• Not be employed by a donor associated with the specific home (if applicable)

Note: Submitting an application does not guarantee placement due to limited inventory.

Step 1: Apply

Complete the intake application and submit required documents:

• DD214 (Member Copy 2, 4, 7, or 8)
• Proof of income and savings
• Personal statement (max 2 pages) describing:
  • Military service
  • Family/living situation
  • Why homeownership matters to you
• Preferred location(s) and willingness to relocate
• Signed Owner-Occupied Affidavit
• Signed Mortgage-Free Home Donation Disclosure

Once approved, applicants will receive email notifications when homes become available in selected areas.
Applicants must respond within 5 days to be considered.

Step 2: Vetting

Applications are reviewed based on:

• Eligibility
• Financial readiness
• Demonstrated need

Step 3: Award

Final selections are based on overall fit for the home and program.

• A caseworker reviews all applications for each available home
• Qualified applicants are submitted to a Housing Selection Committee
• Selection factors include:
  • Financial stability
  • Local community connection
  • Family size
  • Injury/disability status
• Timeline: Approximately 2-4 weeks

Finalist Stage

Three finalists are selected and must:

• Authorize credit check
• Complete background check
• Provide 3 personal and 3 professional references
• Participate in an interview

The final recipient is selected based on best overall fit.

Note: Non selected applicants will be notified.

Recipients must complete the following:

• Participate in a customized transition plan, including education and counseling
• Engage in HUD-approved financial counseling for up to 3 years
• Complete an 8-hour homeownership course ($99)
• Close escrow and receive the deed within approximately 90 days

Deed Restriction (3-Year Requirement)

For the first three years after transfer:

• The home must be used as housing for a veteran or military family
• The property cannot be sold, transferred, or encumbered (no liens)
• Violations may result in the donor reclaiming the property

Note: After three years, the restriction expires.
